He was the son of Jacob and Mary (Reinhardt) Herman. Jack and his brothers, Marvin and Donald, attended the Ingersoll School. Jack received his GED while serving his country in the U.S. Marine Corps, which he joined in June of 1956. During this time he was stationed at Camp Pendleton California, where he was a rifle instructor, teaching other troops the use and care of firearms. Jack participated in the nuclear testing of the atomic bomb as one of the soldiers that was bunkered in trenches about 5400 feet from ground zero during a test in the summer of 1957. He received his Honorable Discharge in 1959. Following his service, Jack returned to Belle Fourche where he managed the family farm and ranch located east of Belle Fourche. In 1973 the farm was sold and Jack, Liz and their girls moved into Belle Fourche. Jack went into the trucking business and he hauled logs, livestock, and bentonite. He also sold real estate. From farming and ranching to truck driving, Jack was a very hard worker and if it was worth doing, he’d do it right and well. In November of 1961 he was united in marriage to Liz Donald in Rapid City. Together they enjoyed almost 50 years of marriage. Jack loved to hunt and fish and go camping and four wheeling with family and friends. He enjoyed buying old tractors and pickups and fixing them. He wasn’t one to sit around much, but when he did, there would be a child on his lap whether it was a daughter, niece, or nephew, or a grandchild. His family was in awe of this quiet, mysterious man, and if they were the focus of his attention, it was a good day. They were sure he could walk on water. He will be missed greatly and always respected and loved. Jack is survived by his wife Liz, of Belle Fourche; daughters, Jana (Lon) Dale of Belle Fourche, Jinger (Steve) Clyde of Belle Fourche, Jodi Scherr of Belle Fourche; 10 grandchildren, Cassidee, Cadee, Ceylee, Mardi, Jack, Doug, Taylor, Trevor, Jacob, and Turner; 1 great granddaughter, Carlie; and his brother, Don (Carol) Herman of Minneapolis, MN. He is also survived by his uncle John (Virginia) Reinhardt of Glenrock WY; and his aunt Betty (David) Schmidt of Belle Fourche. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Jeffrey Dean; and brother, Marvin Herman.
