George Sloan

August 31, 1921 — May 7, 2011

George Sloan, age 89 of Belle Fourche, died Saturday May 7th, 2011 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. The funeral service will be held 10:30am Thursday May 12th, 2011 at the United Methodist Church in Belle Fourche, with Pastor Gail Arnold officiating.  Visitation will be held 5 to 7pm Wednesday at Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche, and one hour prior to the service at the church.  Interment will be held at Black Hills National Cemetery, near Sturgis, with Military Honors provided by the Belle Fourche Veterans Honor Guard. Memorials are preferred to Hospice of the Northern Hills and the United Methodist Church. Charles George Sloan was born August 31, 1921 in Spearfish, South Dakota.  He was the son of Harold and Pamelia (Arbuckle) Sloan.    George attended school in Spearfish, and also the country school in Butte County near Sloan family ranch.  In 1939 he graduated from Belle Fourche High School and following he attended college at Poly Tech School (Rocky Mountain College) in Billings, Montana until 1941 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps.  He served his country during World War II, and during part of his service, he was stationed in England where he helped with several bombing raids, including at Normandy, Northern France, and Rhineland.  Following his service, he returned to Belle Fourche where he ranched, raising beef cattle until 1991 when he retired.  On June 17, 1955 he was united in marriage to Arlyce Richmond in Belle Fourche.  To this union, five children were born: Pamela, Ferne, Charlotte, Charles, and Daniel.  George was an avid sports fan.  There wasn’t any sport that he didn’t enjoy watching.  He also collected many things.  He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, and he will be missed greatly. George is survived by his wife, Arlyce of Belle Fourche; sons, Charles (Nancy) of Piedmont, Daniel (Rose) of San Luis Obispo, CA; daughters, Pamela (Herbert) Pirkey of Edgewood NM, Ferne (Harvey) Tellinghuisen of Lakeside CA, Charlotte (Duane) Engelstad of Fairfield Idaho; 5 grandchildren, Bethany, Kari, Ben, Dane, C.J., Clay, Daniel; and great grandson, Eli.  He is also survived by his brother, Harold Sloan Jr. of Belle Fourche; and sister, Helen McClain of Woodstock IL. George was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant sister, Rosemarie Sloan.
