She was the daughter of Lawrence and Nellie (Baker) Ross. She joined two brothers and one sister. In the fall of 1934 the family moved one mile south of Redelm, and later two more sisters joined the family. Alice attended Redelm School, all eight grades of her elementary education. She then attended Dupree High School, graduating in 1951. She was chosen to go to Girls State her junior year. She loved sports and loved to ride horseback. She was also very active in 4-H Club. After graduating, Alice received her Teaching Certificate and taught at the Redelm School. Most of the time she rode horseback to and from school. On June 5, 1952, Alice was married to Earl Capp of Faith, SD. While Earl was away on his tour of duty in the Army, during the Korean War, Alice worked for the Ziebach County Soil Conservation. After Earl’s return, they lived north of Faith working for Earl’s brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Esteline Capp. While living there, in the fall of 1955, Alice gave birth to their son, David. In 1957, Alice, Earl, and David moved to the Sam Williams farm in Arpan SD. Later in 1960, Dennis was born, and then in 1965, Darin was born. In 1968, Alice and Earl purchased the Oliver and Helen Herrett ranch and in 1980 they built a new home there. Alice served on the school board for the local country school, served on the election board for many years, and had been a 4-H Club leader for several years. She also had been a member of the Newell Saddle Club. Alice enjoyed lambing as she could care for all the new babies and hold them. She spent many a day swathing hay and the hay raking was her specialty as the boys had to follow her with the balers. She enjoyed camping and fishing whenever possible, and had been a member of the Black Hills Hill Billies for a number of years. She loved being Grandma whether a child belonged to her or not. Alice is survived by her husband, Earl of Nisland; sons, David of Nisland; Dennis of Nisland; Darin (Jamie) of Everett WA ; grandchildren, Austin, Dani and Derek Capp; brothers, Harold (Joan) Ross of Sturgis, Raymond (Bette) Ross of Faith; sister, Dale (Brock) Starr of Antelope CA; and numerous nieces.
