Day, 79, Spearfish, passed away on Monday, January 23, 2012 at the Belle Fourche Regional Healthcare Center after a courageous battle with lung cancer. There will be no visitation as her body will be cremated. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. CST at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Winner, SD with Father Lyle Martin and Father Stan Woolley presiding. Donna Mae Hansen was born September 19, 1932 in Sioux Falls, SD to Glenn and Edla (Johnson) Hansen. As a young girl, Donna helped work at the family business, G & E Cafeteria. Donna’s family later moved to Pickstown where she graduated from high school in 1950. She then attended and graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Donna was married to William F. (Bill) Day on September 4, 1955, and to this union two children were born, Michael William and Lori Ann. Donna taught second grade in Winner for several years before devoting herself to her family. Donna had a wonderful flare for gardening and was well known for tending her gardens full of beautiful flowers. She was an avid community service volunteer and was also a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority in Winner, and held many offices. Donna was very proud of having been selected the ESA Girl of the Year. Donna enjoyed travelling with her husband Bill on their many trips during the years Bill was an active member of the State Bar of South Dakota. Donna and Bill loved to dance and had numerous friends they looked forward to spending time with. Bill and Donna moved to Sioux Falls in 1989, and then moved to Spearfish in 2005 so they could be close to their beloved cabin located in Mystic Valley. They spent many enjoyable summers at the cabin with their many close friends and family. Donna spent much of her time there tending to her beautiful flowers. Happy to have shared her life are her husband, William F. Day of Spearfish, a son and daughter-law, Michael and Mary Day of Belle Fourche and three granddaughters, Katie Day of Omaha, NE, Allie Day of Rapid City and Liz Day of Belle Fourche, and a daughter, Lori Day of Sioux Falls and two step-grandsons, Adam Nicholson of Sioux Falls and David Nicholson of Bloomington, IN. She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law Larry and Carol Hansen of Cape Coral, FL, and brothers and sisters-in-law Jack and Mary Ann Day and Ray and Judy Bartels of Winner. She is also survived by sister-in-law Marvel Hansen of Sioux Falls and many nieces, nephews, and many special friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Richard (Dick) Hansen, and a sister, Corinne (Corky) Hansen. A memorial has been established with the Belle Fourche School District Foundation. Arrangements are under the care of the Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche.
