Kinghorn, age 93 of Belle Fourche, died Thursday July 19th, 2012 at the Fort Meade VA Medical Center in Sturgis.Visitation with the family present will be held 5 to 7 pm Tuesday at Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche. The funeral service will be held 10:30am Wednesday July 25th, 2012 at the United Methodist Church in Belle Fourche. Interment will be held in Black Hills National Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Belle Fourche Veterans Honor Guard.Memorials are preferred to the United Methodist Church. Leonard Kinghorn was born to David & Grace (Patterson) Kinghorn on March 18, 1919, in Belle Fourche in a private home just north of the Congregational Church. When Leonard was 2 years old the family moved to Arpan SD. At the age of 6 the family moved to Two-Top Ranch north of Belle Fourche. They next bought a house on Elkhorn Street (the strip) seven years later so he could attend school. Leonard’s junior and senior years were spent batching, and he graduated from Belle Fourche High School in 1938. Leonard worked at the sugar beet factory and the bentonite plant and later returned to Two-Top to help the family with the cattle and sheep ranching. During World War II Leonard was recruited to work in the ship yards in Bremerton, Washington. He worked in the ship yard for over a year, and then enlisted into the Army in 1946. He was sent to Japan as a T4 Sergeant and was discharged in 1948. Leonard was recalled for the Korean War in 1951 and was discharged in 1952. Leonard married Irene Jacobsen from Belle Fourche on February 26, 1953. They lived at the Two-Top Ranch and had three children. They moved their family to Belle Fourche and lived with Irene’s mother so the kids could start school. In 1960 Leonard and Irene bought their first place; “Red Water River Ranches” just outside Belle Fourche and built a home. Leonard and Irene moved to and Irene currently lives in Belle Fourche where they very much enjoy their many wonderful neighbors.Leonard was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings. He is survived by his wife Irene Kinghorn and three children; Patricia (Kinghorn) Thomas and husband, John Thomas from Rapid City, SD; David Kinghorn and wife, Reggie (Sipe) Kinghorn from Casper, WY; Mike Kinghorn from Belle Fourche. Six grandchildren, Jeff and Kelly Thomas from Glenwood Springs, CO; Jeremy Thomas from Rapid City, SD, Jen and Mark Kennedy from Superior, CO; Jessi and Kasey Keller, Rapid City, SD; Lyndsy Kinghorn, Sioux Falls, SD; Tina Kinghorn, Sioux Falls, SD and 1 great grandchild, Jeff and Kelly’s – Bryn.
