Barbara Potter

Barbara Potter age 73 of Belle Fourche, died Tuesday January 20, 2009 at the Spearfish Regional Hospital in Spearfish. The funeral service will be held 2pm Monday at the United Methodist Church in Belle Fourche, with Rev. Gail Arnold officiating. Visitation will be held 1 to 6pm Sunday at Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Barbara Rae Gilbert was born August 11, 1935 at her grandmother’s home in Brainard, Iowa. She was the daughter of Ray and Dorothy (Craft) Gilbert. Barbara grew up in the Brainard area and in 1957 she graduated from the West Union High School. On July 20, 1958 she was united in marriage to Larry Potter in West Union Iowa. To this union a son and 2 daughters were born. Following their marriage, Larry began his military service which took them to El Paso Texas where they enjoyed living for several years. In 1968 they moved to Lake City, Minnesota and in 1971 they moved to Clear Lake South Dakota where they lived for a couple years. In 1975 they moved the family to Belle Fourche where they have lived since. For more than 20 years, Barbara worked for Butte County in the Assessor’s office. For many years she was the Butte County Assessor. She has been an active member of the United Methodist Church where she enjoyed being a member and past director of the choir. She also served as church secretary for a number of years. Barb enjoyed bowling, reading, knitting, sewing, doing crossword puzzles, and she loved cooking. Barb loved to laugh and she will be remembered for her sense of humor and how she had a sense of irony about things in life. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. She rarely missed an event at school for her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. Barbara is survived by her husband, Larry of Belle Fourche; son, Colin (Laurie) of Piedmont; daughters, Jacqueline (Kenny) Merrell of Belle Fourche, Kirsten Potter of Spearfish; 5 grandchildren, Kurt, Nichole, and Blain Potter and Keynen and Kale Merrell. She is also survived by her brother, Robert (Shirley) Gilbert of Searcy, AR. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Lorraine Gilbert; and nephew, Dan Gilbert.
