Loretta Freed

Loretta Freed age 81 of Belle Fourche, died Sunday February 1st, 2009 at her home surrounded by her loving family. The funeral service will be held 10:30 Thursday February 5th, 2009 at the United Methodist Church in Belle Fourche with Rev. Gail Arnold officiating. Visitation will be held 6 to 8 PM Wednesday at Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be held in Black Hills National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Northern Hills Hospice. Loretta Hansen was born August 15, 1927 in Nisland on the family ranch to Roy and Clara (Castleberry) Hansen. Loretta’s father passed away in May of 1930. Her brother, Roy Jr. was born in October of 1930. In 1931 her mother was married to Alfred Hansen. To this union two sisters were born, Arlene and Alfreda. Loretta graduated from the 8th grade in 1941 at the Hillside School and she graduated from Belle Fourche High School in 1945. Loretta graduated from Black Hills State University with a teaching degree. She taught at the Stoughton School for one year. Loretta was married to Thomas Freed on April 6, 1946 at the Methodist Church in Rapid City. Tom and Loretta worked side by side on the ranch until 1995 when they retired and moved into Belle Fourche. Loretta was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and she will be sadly missed. Loretta was involved in many different organizations: Tri State Cowbell’s, Hill Side Women’s Club, Election Board, Butte County Historical Society, For GED Funtier, Telacare, UMW Women’s Association, American Legion Auxiliary, Foster Grandparent Program, and a member of the United Methodist Church. Loretta enjoyed playing cards, dominoes, rummikub, riding horseback, working cattle, and gardening. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family, friends, and children. Loretta’s favorite things she loved were her milk cows and bum lambs and taking care of any new born animals that needed a little extra care. Loretta is survived by one daughter, Cloreen McGuire of Lovell, WY; three sons, Thomas Jr. (Gwenda) of Williston, ND, Rick (Pam) of Newcastle, WY, Dennis (Sharon) of Belle Fourche; 7 grandchildren, Phil “Boz” McGuire, Lori (Skip) McGuire Largent, Neva (Lenny) Freed Eubanks, Lyle (Erica) Freed, Dustin Freed, Brandon (Cassandra) Freed, Brandy (Tyler) Freed Escott; 3 step-grandchildren, Kristy, Doug and Kayla Opdahl; and 10 great grandchildren. She is also survived by 1 brother, Roy (Bernadine) Hansen of Belle Fourche; 2 sisters, Arlene (Roy) Burr of Rapid City, Alfreda Davis of Belle Fourche; sister-in-law, Ella Balluff of Sturgis, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Thomas of 52 years; infant daughter; infant granddaughter; 1 son-in-law; 8 brothers-in-law; and 5 sisters-in-law.
