Edna E. Hergenrider, age 80 of Spearfish, SD passed away Sunday afternoon at Spearfish Regional Hospital. She had suffered serious complications following a surgery several weeks ago. Her funeral service and celebration of her life will be held 2pm Thursday May 28th, 2009 at Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche with Pastor Gene Bauman officiating. Burial will be in Pineslope Cemetery in Belle Fourche. There will be no visitation. Edna Elizabeth Brost was born April 16, 1929 near Strool, South Dakota. She was the fifth child of Otto Emmanuel Brost and Pauline Magdalene Eckhardt. The family eventually grew to 11 children, with 4 of them dying in childhood. In 1930 Edna moved with her family to Butte County. By this time the Depression had settled in to stay, with work hard to come by. Edna’s parents took whatever work they could find, and that meant moving quite often. Through the years the family lived on various farms near Belle Fourche, Nisland, Arpan and Fruitdale. Edna attended country schools in Butte County. As a young woman Edna traveled quite a bit throughout the central US, doing odd jobs in factories and the food service industry. She met and married her first husband in the 1950s. After that marriage failed, she took care of her brother’s five children while he completed his military service. During that time of her life she lived in California, Arkansas and Virginia before coming home to Butte County in the mid-60s. After brother Harold retired from the military, Edna met Johannes (John) Hergenrider, a farmer/cattleman from Belfry, Montana. Edna and John married on December 30, 1972 in Bridger, Montana. Edna and John spent many years raising sugar beets and cattle on John’s land. They also took many vacations to see different parts of the country. Edna enjoyed doing all types of craftwork, quilting, knitting and crocheting. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and canning. In the early 1980s John retired and they continued to live in numerous interesting locations around the country, including Arkansas, Virginia and Florida. In 2002 they returned to South Dakota for a final time, living briefly in Belle Fourche before moving to Spearfish in 2003, where they have lived since. Edna was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Spearfish. She had to deal with some extremely serious physical limitations, but never once did she give up her belief that she could make things better. Her cheerfulness and optimism will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Edna is survived by her husband John Hergenrider of Spearfish, SD; brother Harold Brost of Belle Fourche; sisters Betty (Forrest) O’Brien of Custer, SD, Donna (Jackie) Cooper of Belle Fourche, and Yvonne (Bernard) Spencer of Prineville, OR. She is also survived by the nieces and nephew she treated as her own children: Carolyn (Bruce) Norquist of Centennial, CO, Shirley Brost of Spearfish, and Douglas (Judi) Brost of Cody, WY, as well as numerous other nieces and nephews, and special great-nieces and great-nephews Bethany Dinkel, Sam Brost, Alex Brost, and Ava Dinkel. Edna was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Irvin and Darrell; sisters Irene, Ida, Viola and Delores; special nephew Richard and niece Janet.
