Dale Cundall, age 84 of Nisland, died peacefully Sunday, October 22, 2023 at the Spearfish Canyon Healthcare Center.
Dale’s life will be celebrated 10:30 am Friday, November 17th, 2023 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Belle Fourche, with Rev. Chuck Aurand officiating. There will be no visitation. Funeral arrangements are with Leverington Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche. Inurnment will take place at Pine Slope Cemetery.
Military honors will be provided by the Belle Fourche Veterans Honor Guard.

Dale George Cundall was born June 26, 1939 in Wheatland, Wyoming. He was the son of George and Serena (Brewer) Cundall. Dale graduated from Glendo High School in 1957. After attending college in Laramie Wyoming, Dale joined the United State Air Force and was stationed in the Bering Sea. That service was cut short when he was selected to attend Officer Training School at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. After completing technical school in Air Force Intelligence, Dale was sent to Wiesbaden Air Force Base in Wiesbaden, Germany. Dale served in the U.S. Air Force for 6 ½ years and attained the rank of Captain. While in Germany, Dale met his future wife, Lanelle Marcy. In 1967 they returned stateside to Lanelle’s hometown in Spur, Texas. They were united in marriage August 13, 1967 and after a brief visit to Glendo, Wyoming, they returned to Germany for one more year of service. While stationed in Germany, Dale received his Masters of Education degree. In 1968 he was honorably discharged from the Air Force and they returned to Loveland Colorado. Lanelle taught school and Dale took additional coursework and student teaching at Greeley Colorado. While teaching fifth grade in Loveland, Dale applied to Shannon County Schools, located on the Pine Ridge Reservation. There two became three, with the birth of their son, David.
In 1972, the family moved to Batesland, South Dakota, where Dale became the elementary school principal. While at Batesland, a daughter, Marcy was born. In 1973 the family moved to Edgemont, South Dakota where Dale became the elementary school principal for four years. During that time the family welcomed the birth of a second daughter, Nancy. In 1977, the family moved to Belle Fourche, where Dale became the elementary principal. He retired in 1984. Following, he worked construction and became a supervisor in maintenance at Walmart in Spearfish for over 20 years, retiring in 2007.
Dale enjoyed traveling, and he especially loved taking drives through the Black Hills. He loved gardening, ranching, reading, and music. He loved his family, animals, and was especially fond of eagles.
Dale is survived by his wife, Lanelle of Nisland; son, Dave (Linda) of Spearfish; daughters, Marcy Cundall of Box Elder, Nancy Cundall of Tampa FL; two grandsons, Darren of Box Elder and Adam of Spearfish; 1 great granddaughter, Elianna; brother, Dean (Jennie) of Glendo WY; nephew, Gary of Washington DC; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.
