Dan Harrington

Dan Harrington, age 83 of Hammond, Montana, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, June 13, 2025, surrounded by his loving family at his home.

A celebration of his life will be held 10 A.M. Saturday, June 21, 2025 at the Boyes Community Hall in Boyes, Montana. Visitation will take place 4 to 6 pm Friday at Rangeland Ministries Church in Alzada Montana. Interment will take place at the Harrington Family Cemetery, near Hammond.

The family’s request is that no flowers be given. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorials to the Boyes Community Hall, the Montana Food Bank, Bella Pregnancy Center in Spearfish SD, or a memorial of your choosing. Daniel Eldon Harrington was born January 3, 1942 in Broadus MT. He was the son of Eldon and Beatrice (Patten) Harrington. Dan attended first grade at the Craft School. After a 1 year correspondence course, he attended the Hammond School for grades 3-8. In 1958 he graduated from the Broadus High School at the age of 16. In 1962 he graduated from the School of Business in Rapid City SD. Carolyn Roberts, the girl he would enjoy 60 years of marriage with, moved to the area from Savannah Missouri in 1963, when she found a job with the County Extension Agency. The following year the couple met and on September 18, 1965 they were united in marriage. To this union was born 3 sons: Shane, Troy, and Chad. Following their marriage, Dan worked at the Belle Creek Oilfield, located south of Boyes. Dan also ranched with his father and upon his father’s death in 1976, he took over the ranch operation. In 2015, Dan and Carolyn celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, as well as the 100th anniversary of the family ranch.

In his younger years, Dan enjoyed playing softball for the Boyes Bombers and playing on the men’s basketball league. Later he loved watching his sons and grandkids play sports during their school years. Sheep have been raised on the ranch for more than 85 years. Dan also worked part-time for the Carter County Predator Control Board. He enjoyed helping neighbors when predators threatened their livestock. During these years, he worked with two excellent aerial hunters, Alvin Tatge and Mark Huseby. Alvin and Mark had a combined total of 78 years and Dan was always impressed with their skill and dedication. In 2017, Dan retired from it after 28 years of service. Soon after, his grandson Garrett came along in his footsteps and worked for the county for 6 years. Presently, his son, Chad, is now working for the county as a gunner and doing ground control as well. Dan was a member of the Carter County Sheep and Cattle Growers for many years. He served on the Hammond School Board for 6 years, and for 1 1/2 years he was the officer-in-charge of the Hammond Post Office.

Dan was a gentle man, a man of faith, a man who loved his Lord and family very much. He was an amazing husband, father, and grandfather. He was known for his witty sense of humor and the many funny stories he enjoyed telling, especially with his sons and grandkids. He loved to sing, and he had a great voice, like Marty Robbins. For many years, he enjoyed attending Rangeland Ministries Church in Alzada.

Dan is survived by his wife Carolyn of Hammond; Sons, Shane (Cherry) of Wibaux MT, Troy (Debbie) of Hammond MT, Chad (Sonja) of Hammond MT; 10 grandchildren, Nathan (Anna), Ethan (Kasey), Clayton, Jami (Wacy), McKayla (Tyler), Leah, Laura, Garrett (Katie), Grace (Austin), Jason; 12 great grandchildren (and 3 on the way!). He was preceded in death by his parents, and Carolyn’s parents, Lawrence and Opal Roberts.
