Obituary

Helen H. Riley, age 94 of Belle Fourche, died Saturday, June 20, 2026 at the Monument Health Sturgis Care Center in Sturgis SD.

Services will be held 10am Monday, June 29, 2026 at Leverington Funeral Home of the Northern Hills, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place at Pine Slope Cemetery. Friends may leave written condolences online at: www.LeveringtonFH.com

Helen H Riley was born August 26, 1931near Vale, South Dakota. She was the daughter of Earl and Mary (Lancaster) Holtrey. Helen attended Vale School and graduated from high school on May 13, 1949. In January of 1952 she began working for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Belle Fourche. After the telephone company closed in 1974, she commuted to Deadwood until she retired in 1978.

Helen was united in marriage to Garret W. Riley on April 5, 1953, in Belle Fourche. In 1981, Garret and Helen moved to Las Vegas NV and for 21 years they were “snowbirds”, returning to Belle Fourche each summer. In 2002 they moved back to Belle Fourche and once again became permanent residents of South Dakota. Garret and Helen enjoyed fishing and made a couple of trips to Alaska and Saskatchewan, Canada.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband in 2006; her parents; three brothers, William, Robert and Edward; sister, Ena; and an infant sister. She is survived by her stepson, Milton Riley Sr. of Ogden UT; stepdaughter, Muriel Buxton of Bountiful UT; 6 step grandchildren; 14 step great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
