Howard Neal Nussbaum was born February 10, 1937, in Pine Bluffs, Wyoming. He was the son of Vernon and Mabel (Rohweder) Nussbaum. The family lived in various places in Colorado and Wyoming before moving to a ranch south of Buffalo, South Dakota. Howard graduated from Harding County High School in 1955. He was drafted into the Army in March of 1957. Following basic training, he went to Europe where he spent sixteen months in France as a signal supply and parts specialist. While there, he traveled to England, went to the World’s Fair in Brussels, Hitler’s Roost, and Holland, returning to the states in 1959. He was honorably discharged and was in the reserves for 4 years.

A friend of Howard’s set up a blind date with a lady from Winner, South Dakota, who was attending Black Hills Teachers College—Lily Clark. Howard married Lily on July 23, 1961. To this marriage, 3 children were born—Kurt, Roxanne, and Rita. Howard worked at the grain elevator from 1961 until 1999—Tri-State Milling, Pawnee, Hubbard Milling, ConAgra, and finally Dakota Mill and Grain. When Howard retired in 1999, his dream was to go to Alaska. He and Lily spent about a month in Alaska. Then they began going to Arizona for the winter each year. For 12 years, they traveled, connected with family, and made many new friends.

Howard is survived by his wife, Lily; son, Kurt Nussbaum, daughter, Roxanne (Clay) Clark, and son-in-law, Norman Hendrickson. Grandchildren—Joshua (Melissa) Clark, Casey (Lindsey) Hendrickson, and Ashley Hendrickson. Great-Grandchildren—Quinn & Wyatt Clark, Skylar Hendrickson and Sophie Hendrickson. Brother—Marvin (Mona) Nussbaum, and sisters Phyllis VanDewerker and Carol Richards, brother-in-law Bill (Joan) Clark, sister-in-laws—Alice (Ray) Minchow and Nita Clark, and many nieces and nephews.

Preceeding Howard in death are his parents, Vernon and Mabel Nussbaum, his in-laws, George and Rhoda Clark, daughter, Rita Hendrickson, brother Edwin Nussbaum, brother-in-laws Ted VanDewerker and Howie Richards.
