James A. Shevling was born February 12, 1937 in Rapid City. He was the son of Everett and Katie (Matthesen) Shevling. At a young age, Jim moved with his family to Washington where he spent part of his early childhood. At the age of 6, Jim moved to Nisland with his family, where they farmed for several years. Jim graduated from the Nisland High School in 1956. While in high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard and after his graduation, he moved to Georgia where he completed his basic training. In July of 1962, he was honorably discharged.
Jim was united in marriage to Janet Shear in 1957, in Belle Fourche. To this union was born four children: Wanda, Debi, Robert, and Cindy. For over 50 years, Jim was co-owner of S & S Trucking. He loved his business, and he really appreciated everyone who worked for him. He retired in 2016. In the early 1970’s, Jim began construction of the house located in Spearfish Canyon. It took a talented carpenter and a lot of hard work, and Jim did it all with the help of his family. It’s been a wonderful place to live all these years. For the past several years, Jim and Janet have enjoyed wintering in Mesa, AZ. They’ve also enjoyed several cruises. They were blessed with 66 years of marriage, and on their 50th anniversary they made some lifetime memories on their trip to Africa.
Jim was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and he attended Church of Grace in Mesa. He was a member of the Deadwood Elks Club, and he is also a Mason, belonging to the Cedar Lodge in Belle Fourche. He was a member of the Naja Shrine Club and served as Potentate in 1982. He belonged to the Cabiri of Past Potentates.
Jim will be remembered for being a man who worked hard, played hard, and fought cancer hard as well. He was dedicated to his family and he loved the outdoors. He enjoyed snowmobiling in the winter, water-skiing in the summer, and four wheeling all the time. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Jim is survived by his wife, Janet Shevling of Lead; son, Robert (Shelly) Shevling of Lead; daughters, Wanda (Tim) Fox of Gillette WY, Debi (Scott) Stearns of Gillette WY; 14 grandchildren; and 26 great grandchildren.
