James Steiner, age 73 of Belle Fourche, went home to heaven on Thursday, April 28, 2022 at the Fort Meade VA Medical Center in Sturgis.

His life will be celebrated on Thursday, May 5, 2022 at 10:30am, at Leverington Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche.  There will be no visitation.  Inurnment will take place at Black Hills National Cemetery with Military Honors by the Belle Fourche Veterans Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Belle Fourche Veterans Honor Guard.

James Edward Steiner was born April 13, 1949 in Elgin, North Dakota.  He was the son of Tony and Caroline (Kuntz) Steiner.  Jim grew up on the family farmstead in the Mott, North Dakota area.  After graduating from high school, Jim entered the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.  During his time in Vietnam, Jim served with distinction.  He was awarded the Purple Heart and several other medals of honor.  After his honorable discharge, Jim returned home and started his business, Steiner Construction.  The construction of homes brought him and his family to North Dakota and Montana.  In North Dakota, Jim was one of the first men to build Earth Homes.  He built three of these energy efficient homes, and he received much attention from the national and local media.  They were beautiful homes, very unique, and as a result, the talk of the town.  In the mid 1980’s, Jim came to Spearfish, SD. He was united in marriage to Lois on July 5, 1991 and moved to St. Onge. In October of 1996 he settled in Belle Fourche.  Part of Jim’s life involved raising 3 children, and after his marriage to Lois he was blessed with 2 more.  Eventually the grandkids started coming, and God blessed Jim and the family even more. 

One of Jim’s great loves in life was his second business he named DakotaLand Doors.  Jim was a distributor of garage doors, and he also installed them and serviced them.  This business was enjoyable to Jim.  So much so that even in his last days of life, he was still concerned about the jobs he had on his schedule.  Jim loved helping people and he was honest, dependable and trustworthy.  Jim was also very patriotic.  Finding ways to help veterans who were affected with Agent Orange and PTSD was very important to him.  He was active in Pointman Ministries which was a ministry for veterans and his name is on the Spearfish Veterans Monument.  Jim was also very serious about his faith, and his walk and his talk matched up very well to the faith he carried in his heart.  He wasn’t a perfect man, but he walked humbly and quietly and looked for ways to spread the Word.  He was happy to have helped build a church in Mexico City, Mexico, and he also helped start several churches in the area.  Jim enjoyed motorcycles, dirt bikes, memories made with a potato gun, and his yard work.  He also loved old cars, camping, and fixing things.  He was a good man, a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, and he will be missed very much.

James is survived by his wife, Lois of Belle Fourche; daughter, Nicole Steiner-Valentine of Spearfish; sons, Tracy (Diane) Steiner of Black Hawk, Ken (Susan) Steiner of Rapid City; step-sons, Chet (Kristen) Kilmer of Spearfish, Stoney (Jenn) Kilmer of Rapid City; grandchildren, Danielle Valentine, Maegan Steiner, Quinn Hall, Damon and Drevon Perry, Katy Schepler, Sarah Alfson, Taytum, Kylie, Cadence, and Desirae Kilmer; great grandchildren, Knox Steele, Ryan Hall, Maxis Hall; brothers, Gary (Janelle) Steiner of Bismarck ND, Howard (Kathe) Steiner of Rapid City, David Steiner of Spearfish, Ray (Phyl) Steiner of Mott ND; sisters, Mary (Verl) Heidecker of Belle Fourche, Eileen (Alex) Golian of Baltimore MD; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Doug Steiner.
