James Alfred Hostetter was born November 10, 1955 at Sturgis, SD. He was third child of

Johnny and Betty (Woodard) Hostetter.  When he was a year old the family moved to the Leber place just east of Faith where they had a small dairy.   When he was 9 years old the family moved to the Gottschault place about three miles east of Faith. He enjoyed afternoon fishing trips to the stock dam with the family (a daily occurrence in the

summer if his chores were done), riding his pony and horses and chasing the neighbor's goats. Hunting rabbits and birds with the bow and arrows he would make from the green willows and baler twine was also a favorite activity. He attended all 12 years of school at the Faith Independent Public School and graduated from high school in 1975. Jim never met a good time he didn't like and enjoyed dances, fights, hunting and fishing with his buddy Mike Stocklin favorite uncle Virgil Woodard.

Jim’s life took on an exciting and wonderful change when he went to work for a rancher at Red Owl. Not only did he have a great boss but this is where he won the best prize of his life when he met the love of his life and married the rancher's daughter. He married Sheila Bastian on September 9, 1976 in Sturgis, SD.  Following their marriage, Jim worked as a logger while they resided in Whitewood.  During these years they were blessed with the birth of their two sons, Tucker Joe and Troy James.  In 1979 they moved to Union Center.  For several years Jim worked on area ranches during that time.  Around 1990, the Hostetter family moved to  Newell, where Jim worked for the City for many years.  In 1993 they moved to Red Owl, when Jim started working for the Meade County Highway Department.  This was a job that Jim truly loved and took great pride in.  For many years he bladed and snow-plowed over 100 miles of roads.  Jim also owned his own business, Jim’s Excavation.  For many years he hauled gravel, operated a back hoe, and did all sorts of dirt work.  Jim retired from Meade County in 2020 and shortly after, moved to Belle Fourche to be closer to family.  Jim was forced to deal with serious health issues the last couple years, and he showed great strength and courage during this time.

Jim will be remembered for the strength, his stubbornness and strong-will, as well as his great love for his grandchildren.  He loved hunting and fishing, collecting guns and reloading ammunition.  Trap shooting was fun, and shooting sports of any kind with his grandkids was one of his favorite things to do.  Jim was well loved, and he will be greatly missed.

Jim is survived by his wife, Sheila of Belle Fourche; sons, Tucker (Sue Littleton) of Newell, Troy (Ann-Marie) of Belle Fourche; 7 grandchildren: Tate, Tanner, Tyce, Trinity, Mackenzie, Morgan, Kashton; brothers and sisters: Linda Hoffman of Newell, Jack of Whitewood, Cindy Eaton of Faith, Jay (Laurie) of Gillette WY, Justin (Vicki) of Torrington WY; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; grandparents Clyde and Edith Woodard, father-in-law Merle Bastian, mother-in-law Doris Bastian, brothers-in-law Don Hoffman, Kenny Eaton, and Gale Bastian and numerous aunts and uncles.
