Val Shoemaker, age 84 of Spearfish, died Saturday, November 7, 2026 at the Peaceful Pines Senior Living Center in Spearfish.

The Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30am Tuesday, November 17, 2026 at St. James Lutheran Church in Belle Fourche. Inurnment will be held in Pine Slope Cemetery. Valeria Kay Johnson was born August 25, 1942 in Huron, South Dakota. She was the daughter of Kenneth and Nedra (Blue) Johnson. In 1963, Val graduated from the Sioux Valley School of Nursing. Later she would receive a BA Degree in Health Management from Graceland University.

Val was united in marriage to Curtis Shoemaker on December 5, 1964 in Carthage, South Dakota. To this union three sons were born: Vincent, Steven, and Jerad. In 1976, the family moved to Belle Fourche where Val worked as a Registered Nurse for many years at Belle Fourche Healthcare. Val also worked independently for the Belle Fourche Community, those in assisted living situations, and also as a Parish Nurse. She retired in 2009. She was a long-time member of St. James Lutheran Church, where she was actively involved in the women’s ministries.

Val was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She’ll be remembered for her strength, and her fortitude, especially in the last months of her life. She took care of her husband very well, and it always took a lot to slow her down. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, and especially her church family.

Val is survived by her sons, Vincent (Lynsi) of Larkspur CO, Steven (Pam) of Georgetown TX; niece, Susan Anderson of St. John IN; brother and sisters-in-law, Larry and Mary Shoemaker of Belle Fourche, Pat Wiles of Virginia, Bev Johnson of Vale; and grandchildren, Brittany Kleyman, Bailey (Eric)_____, Brandon Shoemaker, Allison Traver, Nathaniel (Devin) Shoemaker, Erin (Robert) Hales; and great granddaughter, Beth Hales.

Val was preceded in death by her parents; son, Jerad; brothers, Floyd and Ron Johnson; nephew, Kenneth Johnson; and nieces, Kimberly and Barbara Johnson.
